I like to visit my client in their own home and or have them come to my home studio where they can see many of my portraits. I listen to what they are expecting in a portrait making notes.
I take a great many photographs in a variety of settings, sometimes in their home, out walking, sitting in a garden or even out sailing on the lake. The interest of the person plays an important part for the expression. I do not like to include a detailed backgrounds but rather give just a vague impression using the colours in the background to enhance the character within the face.
On several occasions I have been given old photographs of a deceased person.
I do also enjoy painting animal portraits using their photos or taking the images myself.
Working from photographs has many advantages, the important one being that you receive the expression of your choosing as well as not having to sit for endless hours.
After taking many digital images and reducing them to a reasonable number, we meet again for the final selection.
